[ Description ]
The episode begins in Alex's room, where Mr. Whitman is looking at a collage of pictures Maria has spread out over his bed. Liz is working on the computer and notices a little card from the funeral. She asks Mr. Whitman about it and he explains that they are condolence cards from the funeral. The particular one that Liz is holding came from Alex's host family in Sweden. Mr. Whitman admits that he never even thought about contacting them; Liz questions him as to who did and the school set up considering the trip Mr. Whitman replies that someone from the school guidance office must have. He then exits, telling the girls he'll order a pizza for them. Liz continues her search on Alex's computer and Maria notes that she is going overboard with the investigation. Liz disagrees, telling her that somewhere in his room there must be other clues. Maria asks whether or not Max knows that she is continuing the investigation and Liz tells her that he probably doesn't care. Maria expresses her anger that there has been a separation between their two units: alien and non-alien. Just then, Liz finally comes across a file of interest. Within a file folder, she notices five subfolders, one of which is locked. Liz can't understand why Alex would lock this file and asks whether or not Maria knows the password. At first, Maria once again suggests that they "shouldn't be doing this," however, she finally gives into Liz and tells her the password. When the files are finally unlocked, we see a message flash over and over again: Leanna is not Leanna.
At school, Liz talks with someone who has knowledge of computers. He explains that the code, which Liz is using, doesn't match any work they were doing in his computer class, however, it is a binary code. (Note: Binary code is something used to tell computers how to operate.) This person then further explains that without an application, the code means nothing at all. As Max approaches, we watch as he and Tess agree to make study plans for that night. Tess departs as he approaches Liz. Max explains that he wants to talk their situation through. He also tells Liz that he doesn't want "this" to separate the group. Liz agrees with him, however, when Max tells her that he is willing to forgive her for the things she said at the wake, she becomes angered and responds that she still believes "the truth." Max warns her to be careful since they have always worked together as a group. Liz asks him whether or not he believes her and when he replies negatively, she explains that they can't work as a group on this particular investigation.
In the band room, Maria is taking photographs of something as Liz explains how whatever happened to Alex happened to him while he was in Sweden. Liz then suggests that Leanna is an alien that they don't know nor have ever come across. Maria suggests they look at the situation in human terms: there is a possibility that Leanna and he got in a fight or he caught her cheating, etc. Liz then continues to say that she played around with the sequence of 1s and 0s in the code for an altogether count of 20. When Liz counted the number of characters in the "Leanna is not Leanna" sequence she noted there were also 20 including the spaces. Suddenly, Michael enters and asks to speak with Maria. Liz departs and it is obvious that Michael is there to tell Maria they need to stop their investigation. Maria suggests that Liz might be right and Michael interrupts her, noting that is even more reason to end the investigation as it could be dangerous. Maria goes to take another picture and Michael questions her as to what she is doing. She explains that Liz and her are making a yearbook collage for Alex and even notes that taking pictures of his instruments is pretty lame. Michael offers to help and when Maria finally notices he is serious, she asks his assistance with a couple of things.
In the desert, we watch as Max, Michael, Isabel and Tess walk down a road and discuss Liz and Maria's investigation. Isabel suggests that Liz might be right; this prompts Max to become angered with her. He explains that there is nothing "remotely alien" about it and even if it was they could investigate it themselves later on. Isabel then tells Max and the others that she received a "waiting list" confirmation from San Francisco. All of her guidance counsellors and teachers are trying their best to get her recommendations; if she gets in, college would be a really good opportunity for her. Max informs her that they will discuss this at a later time and walks away with Tess.
In Max's room, Tess and he discuss their relationship. Tess can't help wondering where they are and so Max explains that he is scared of being with her. Tess notes that Max is scared of going home and this prompts Max to question what home really is. Being that he feels their home is all one big dream, Max admits his fear and tells Tess that earth seems so much "more real." Meanwhile, we find Liz at the Deluca's, where Sean is fixing a pipe. Sean gives his condolence for Alex's death and Liz thanks him for the flowers he sent. She then asks Sean how he is able to break into the bowling alley. Sean tells her he uses a pick that he made and so Liz asks if a Swiss army knife would do the same kind of job. Sean is confused and so Liz explains that she is trying to break into the school. Sean tells her that he will be unable to help because of his record and probation; Liz tells him that she would never put him in that kind of situation.
The scene shifts and we watch as Sean uses a pick to help crack the Guidance Office's door. Once inside, Sean gives her a set of keys that will open all the file cabinets and explains that he will do a sweep of the hallways. Inside, Liz finds the cabinets she is looking for and uses the key to open the lock. She pulls out Alex's file and goes to the photocopier and copies the files she is looking for. Sean enters and warns they that their time is up. Liz puts the file back and they exit the guidance office as Liz explains she doesn't think she "got it all." Sean explains that with breaking and entry you can never stay in one place for too long. As they turn a corner, a security guard flashes a light in their face and tells them to halt.
Max meets with Michael in the park where they talk about Isabel's college decisions. Michael asks whether or not he should speak with Isabel about it since there is obvious tension between she and Max. Since Max doesn't want her going, he agrees to let Michael talk to her. Max turns to leave and Michael stops him. Michael asks whether or not everything is all right with Max since has been acting strange lately, especially when he snapped at Isabel. Max tells Michael that if he wants theories on Alex's death he can go talk with Liz; he then asks Michael's theory. Michael explains that he has no idea, but notes to Max that he doesn't want their leader to be making opinions based on what he (Max) would like to be true. Max then tells Michael that he cannot bear the thought that Alex was killed because of their existence on earth.
At the school, Hanson speaks with Sean, who explains that he was trying to get down Liz's pants. Hanson can't understand why they would break into the school to have sex, however, Sean notes to him that it all had to do with an adrenaline rush. Hanson then speaks with Liz, and tells her that since she is a good kid he's going to let her off with a strong warning. Liz thanks the deputy and watches as they take Sean away. At Valenti's, he explains what Hanson told him about Sean and Liz's break-in. Valenti warns them that they have to be careful and so Max assures him that he'll "take care of it."
At Liz's, we see all of her "clues" spread out around the room as she telephones Mr. & Mrs. Olson, Alex's Swedish host family. She urges them to call her at any time because it is very important.
Back at school, Isabel is sitting outside looking at college stuff. Michael approaches, sits down, and Isabel explains that although her housing choices are limited, she wants a specific dorm located on one of the papers. Michael tells her that it is nice, however, he also tells her that she can't go. Isabel is insulted and Michael explains his reasoning: they all need her in Roswell, especially if something bad is to happen. Michael suggests to her that she shouldn't make a major decision like this, especially because her emotions are "running so high" after Alex's death. Isabel tells Michael that he makes all his decisions in times like that; he can't argue with that. Finally, Michael tells her the decision is final, at least in the eyes of Max. Isabel becomes angered and tells Michael that if Max has something to say to her he should say it to her face.
In a classroom, Maria shows off her "work in progress" of Alex's collage to the yearbook committee. Although they like the collage, their representative doesn't think that it is in the best interest of the student body's yearbook. This representative is willing to compromise and asks Maria whether or not she needs every single piece of memorabilia. Maria explains that she does, along with Liz, who is obviously absent.
The scene shifts to Liz who is speaking on a cell phone. She is explaining to a Swedish embassy representative about the building, which is in the background of the picture where Alex and Leanna (Alex's Swedish babe) posed for a picture. The representative is not very helpful, however, he allows Liz to scan and send over the picture. As Liz hangs up, Max approaches to ask her what she and Sean were doing at the school the previous night. Liz explains that she doesn't have time to talk. Max tells her that she must stop the investigation; he promises to consider that an alien killed Alex if she just lets everything go. Liz is not willing to do that and so Max grabs her and tries to reason with her. He tells her that if Alex really did commit suicide there is a possibility she is raising a lot of suspicion for nothing. Liz demands that Max let go of her, which he does. He then walks away.
Later that night, Max sits in a park and thinks. Tess finds him and sits down; she asks if Max is OK. He doesn't answer, however, she tells him that she wants to show him something. In a planetarium somewhere Max looks through a super capacity telescope as Tess points him towards the North Star. She tells Max that although it's not their planet, you can see the North Star from where they used to live.
Maria enters Liz's room, which has obviously been turned, into an investigation firm. Liz is working on the computer and Maria thanks her for not showing up at the yearbook meeting. Liz apologizes but tells Maria that she is closing in on Leanna. According to Liz's investigation, Alex and Leanna were supposed to follow a certain itinerary, however, there are no buildings in the Baltic Islands, which match the one in which Alex, and Leanna took the picture in front of. Maria begs Liz to stop her investigation and to just be sad like the rest of them. Liz suggests that Maria doesn't believe her either and Maria gives her a hesitated "yes." Maria then notes that although she is "doing this" for Alex, Liz doesn't care who's life she screws up in the process; i.e. Sean's.
The scene shifts to the Deluca's house where Liz apologizes to Sean for the other night. Sean explains that Hanson made him speak with Valenti who gave him a lot of community service. Sean offers Liz a drink, which she refuses. Liz tells him that she must be on her way and Sean asks her to spend some time with him. Liz refuses and Sean asks her if there is anything he can do with her. She apologises before exiting, but just before reaching the door, Liz turns around and gives Sean a kiss.
At Michael's, Maria knocks on the door and wants to know why Michael never came to pick her up. Michael apologizes; he tells her that he forgot and that they will leave now. Maria sits down and tells him that they don't have to go. Michael urges her to leave because the print shop closes at 7:00pm. Maria explains to Michael how she can't rely on him since he won't always be there. Michael is confused and so Maria explains by foreshadowing that someday, he'll get on a space ship and leave her for good. Maria then exits.
At Liz's, she tries dialling the Olsen's once again to finally receive an answer. It is a man who explains that no one in his house has the last name of Olsen. He then explains that he would appreciate if Liz did not call again and quickly hangs up. Liz looks at the Mass card the family sent for Alex. On the envelope we see a logo for Victor's Florist Shop.
The scene shifts and we watch as Liz begs a florist to let her verify the address and phone number with the credit card receipt. When the man refuses, Liz asks why he won't help her in her impossible situation. He replies that he is trying to run a business and not a detective agency. The scene shifts and we find Liz at a bank where a bank teller is counting out money for her. She hands the money over to Liz and tries to guess at what she is using the money towards. Liz explains that it is for a trip to Europe.
Michael enters the student lounge to find Isabel looking at a college magazine. He sits down and hands her a book and application for Santa Fe State University. It is obvious Max is making an attempt at trying to aid their situation, however, Isabel explains that she won't accept the offer. Isabel then reads a snippet of one of her recommendations and notes that the "outside world" views her as someone who can handle bigger and better places than Roswell, NM. Max tells her not to make him the bad guy and Isabel explains to him that he's acting like the bad guy. Isabel then informs Max that both their parents and every teacher knows that Isabel will be leaving for San Francisco and is thrilled about it; she gives Max the ultimatum to either jump on the band wagon or get out of her way. Isabel storms off and Max runs after her, explaining that he will do everything in his power to stop her from going away to college. Once again, Max tells Isabel that the answer is no. Isabel explains that Max is killing her and crumples up a piece of paper, uses a power to melt it into ashes and then drops it on the floor. She tells Max to have a good time trying to be a leader without any followers. As she walks away some guy tries to hit on Isabel. She waves her hand in the air and we watch as the boy hits the floor. Max helps him up as the others chatter about it.
Outside of town, we watch as Liz sits and waits to be picked up. Max spots her and pulls up. He is furious and is driving very recklessly. He asks Liz where she is going and Liz replies "Sweden." Max instructs her to get into the car but Liz refuses. A taxi driver pulls up and asks if they are going to the airport. Max replies no and Liz replies yes. Liz tells the man to put the stuff in the car. He gets one suitcase as Max grabs the other and tells Liz to get into the car. Max tries to reason with Liz but she just won't listen to him. Max informs her that by leaving he will put Isabel, Michael and Tess into danger. Liz explains that she has an obligation to Alex and is going anyway. She grabs the suitcase, gives it to the driver and Max stops her once again before she tries to get into the car. He tells her that if she leaves their friendship is over. Liz agrees, noting that it is the price she'll have to pay. When in the cab, Liz yells to Max and tells him that someone murdered Alex and covered up his death. The cab pulls away.
At the Deluca's, Maria enters to find Michael at her kitchen table. He explains that although they have been through some pretty rough times, Maria is right: he won't always be there for her. Although he can't tell when he'll be leaving, Michael informs Maria that he can promise her something: now. Maria accepts this and kisses Michael's hand as tears roll down her face.
We next find Max and Tess outside the Roswell Observatory. Max explains to Tess that he has been hiding from his true alien self, which at one time he viewed as a monster. It is obvious that Max is confused and he explains that he has lost everyone. Tess grabs his hand and explains that she'll be "here for eternity." They kiss and we watch as the scene shifts to Liz at the airport. We watch, as Tess and Max get more intimate as Liz tries to catch her plane. Before she reaches the plane Liz receives a phone call from the representative from the Swedish Embassy. The man explains that the building, which Liz is speaking of, was torn down years before the date prior to Alex's visit. As Liz looks at the photo she realizes that Alex never went to Sweden.
As this episode comes to the close, we watch Tess and Max rolling around on the observatory's grounds making love ( rated as the worse roswell seen ever, oh why did they have to do it?)
